Today a veteran spoke in church about a night time training exercise twenty years ago in a remote (light pollution free) New Mexico desert while wearing night vision goggles.
He said normally the human eye can see 2-3,000 stars in the sky, but that night wearing military grade goggle he saw a sky full of stars—countless stars.
It was an overwhelming experience for him. It reminds me of spiritual experiences astronauts have experienced from outer space, while looking at planet Earth.
The Webb telescope gives us a tiny glimpse of the vast universe and raises many questions about how it all came to be many billions years ago.
One modern skeptic of religion on Twitter said he might believe in religion if any ancient religious texts had mentioned the vastness of the universe.
I replied, you mean like this?
And quoted this from the Book of Moses —
“And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten. And the first man of all men have I called Adam, which is many. But only an account of this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, give I unto you. For behold, there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man; but all things are numbered unto me, for they are mine and I know them.” (Moses 1:33-35)
I stand all amazed at the beauty, vastness, and order of the universe. I feel deep reverence for a loving Creator, who created all things, including an earth where we all get to experience life and love and learning, as well as to overcome trials and challenges, which help us grow.
