Exploring the Path to Personal Happiness in the Age of Global Unhappiness

Jon Clifton’s book Blind Spot reports on the global rise of unhappiness. It’s a deeply concerning trend.

But what about you in your own life? How are you doing?

Do you feel in control of your happiness trajectory?

Do you know what makes you more happy and less happy and are you choosing to do more of the former?

Often on Twitter I see people celebrating their sobriety, and doing tweetstorms on how quitting alcohol made their life immeasurably better.

I love seeing these every time. Someone has consciously chosen a better way.

Elsewhere people post all kinds of things on social media about their accomplishments, careers, places they go, and people in their life that matter to them.

Posting about them might not add to their happiness (it might in fact diminish it) but the events or people themselves probably do.

What if Gallup or some other firm could identify the path to happiness, or all the elements of well-being, and how to maximize them in your life?

What if the path to happiness for you personally has something to do with your why—your mission or purpose—and your strengths, your God-given talents and how you are using them.

What if you could have a custom AI system that helped you optimize your journey to happiness and fulfillment?

Would anyone care?

Or are we all so busy surviving, or passively scrolling and actively spending time and money in the material world, that we wouldn’t change our mindset or our course even if the new path was staring us in the face.

I’m so fascinated by how the wisdom of the crowds combined with the wisdom of the ages can be infused into an AI system (I think of AI as “collective intelligence” not artificial) to help each person increase their chances of happiness — but I don’t know how many people will even consider trying it.

What do you think?

Do you think you are happier than you were ten years ago, about the same, or less happy?
