Exploring Food Independence on Our 22-Acre Midwest Property: From City Life to Sustainable Living

I live in the Midwest on 22 acres. We have a fishing pond. But I’m from the city so hardly know what to do with the rest of the property except mow our beautiful grass.

Our neighbors talk about our “little parcel” since so many of the farms around us are 80 or 160 acres.

I’m hoping to plow some ground and rent a roto-tiller which I used a couple of times as a kid, and plant some corn and tomatoes. But it’s getting late in the spring and I travel a ton.

There are many family, community and faith gardens popping up, more people raising chickens and rabbits, and more people starting beehives in our area the last couple of years.

It’s much harder in urban settings to raise food, but some people find creative ways to do it.

What about you? Are you taking any steps towards food independence?

Given inflation and talk of a global wheat shortage, are you planning to produce more of your own food: garden, chickens, sprouts, anything?
